Everything you need to know about storage at Handy Storage. Can't find your answer? Just give us a call — we're always happy to help.
Getting started
How do I get a unit? ▾
Just get in touch by phone (021 946 425) or email (info@handystorage.co.nz). We'll discuss your needs, recommend the right unit size, and arrange your move-in. We can have you set up the same day in most cases. New clients can also arrange a site viewing by appointment, Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm.
How do I choose the right unit size? ▾
Use the space calculator on our Pricing & Units page to add up what you're storing and get a recommendation. As a rough guide: a 2×1m unit holds 5–10 boxes; a 4×2m (our most popular) fits a full bedroom plus lounge; a 6×3m handles three to four bedrooms; and our largest, the 8×4m Jumbo, fits a whole house (currently fully occupied — contact us for the waitlist). We also have bespoke sizes available. When in doubt, call us and we'll help you get the right fit.
Is there a minimum storage period? ▾
You can store for as little as one month. We offer flexible month-to-month agreements with no lock-in period.
Are my belongings covered by insurance while in storage? ▾
Your belongings are not automatically covered by our facility insurance while in storage. We strongly recommend checking your home and contents insurance policy, as many policies extend to items in storage. If you're unsure, speak to your insurer before moving in. We're happy to advise on what other customers typically do.
Do you sell packing materials? ▾
We don't sell packing materials directly, but we're happy to point you in the right direction. Good-quality boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and furniture covers are available from Bunnings, The Warehouse, or specialist moving suppliers. If you're unsure what you need, give us a call — we can give you a rough idea based on your unit size.
Can I use the storage unit for my business? ▾
Yes — we welcome business customers. Our units are used by local businesses for stock storage, equipment, documents, and overflow. Month-to-month terms give you the flexibility to scale up or down as your business needs change. Get in touch to discuss what would work best for you.
Access & security
What are your access hours? ▾
Existing storers can access their units from 6am to 11pm, every day of the year — including weekends and public holidays. For new client viewings, we ask that you book an appointment (Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm) as we're not always on-site.
How secure is the facility? ▾
Very secure. We have 24/7 CCTV cameras covering the entire facility, an electric security fence around the perimeter, PIN-controlled gate access, and individually alarmed units. Each storer receives their own unique PIN — only you (and anyone you choose to share it with) can access your unit.
Do I need to bring my own lock? ▾
Yes — you'll need to supply your own padlock for your unit. We recommend a quality closed-shackle padlock for maximum security. If you're unsure what to get, ask us when you move in and we'll advise. A good padlock from Bunnings or Mitre 10 will do the job well.
Can someone else access my unit on my behalf? ▾
Yes — you can share your access PIN with anyone you authorise to access your unit. If you want someone added to your account formally, just let us know and we can arrange that.
What can I store?
What items can I store? ▾
Our units are suitable for a wide range of household and business goods — furniture, boxes, clothing, appliances, documents, business stock, equipment, and more. All units are clean, dry, and ground-floor for easy access. See our packing tips below for advice on getting the most out of your space.
What items are NOT allowed in storage? ▾
For the safety of all our customers and the facility, the following items are strictly prohibited:
Food and perishables: Food, drinks, or animal products of any kind — these attract pests and cause odour.
Animals or plants: No living things may be stored on site.
Illegal items: Stolen goods, drugs, drug-making equipment, or counterfeit products are strictly prohibited.
If you're unsure whether a particular item is suitable, please contact us before storing it.
Packing tips
General packing advice ▾
Label every box clearly on the sides as well as the top. Use quality packing materials — sturdy cartons, packing paper, bubble wrap, and good tape. Don't overfill boxes (they become hard to stack and carry). Pack heavy items in smaller boxes. Pack books flat to protect spines. Stack heavier boxes on the bottom.
How should I store furniture? ▾
Empty wardrobes, cupboards, and drawers before storage — they're much easier to move and take up less effective space when empty. Use furniture covers or drop sheets to protect upholstery and surfaces. Remove legs from tables and beds where possible to save space. Pack clothing and soft items in sealed cartons with lavender or moth protection.
What about electronics and appliances? ▾
Wrap electronics individually in bubble wrap and handle with care. Store TVs upright (never flat) and protect screens. Remove batteries from all devices to prevent corrosion damage. Fridges and freezers should be clean, completely dry, and stored with the door slightly ajar to allow air circulation. Never store food inside appliances.
Tips for crockery and glassware ▾
Pack crockery and glassware into smaller, manageable cartons. Stand plates and platters on their edge — they're less likely to break this way. Wrap every fragile item individually in packing paper (not newspaper, which can stain). Nest cups and bowls where possible. Fill any gaps in boxes with scrunched paper or linen to prevent movement, and add a layer of padding at the top and bottom of every box.
Payments & billing
How do I pay my account? ▾
To pay your account, please contact us directly by phone or email and we'll arrange payment by bank transfer or card. If you have any billing queries, just get in touch and we'll sort it out promptly.
When is payment due? ▾
Storage is billed monthly in advance. Your payment due date will be set at the time of your move-in. If you have any questions about your invoice or need to discuss your payment, please contact us directly.
